Of Rommel & Patton, Starmageddon, Reagan and Mulroney

Aired in 1987, uploaded to YouTube in 2013. Fourteen months on the site and it's garnered all of 27 views (my visits account for three). It's an interesting interview in that Rohmer shares his opinion that Star Wars is doomed, but only because the shuttle is grounded and Reagan is soon to be out of office. My favourite part comes in discussing Brian Mulroney:
When the fire starts he throws gasoline on it instead of something to put the fire out. And that has been Mr Mulroney's biggest difficulty. And the handling of the Sinclair Stevens affair is just another graphic example of that - not only does he throw gasoline on it, when he flips to the other side and changes his mind, he throws alcohol on it.
I chortled.

  1. Do you think Rohmer was getting a dig in about Mulroney being a souse? Pretty subtle for guy whose jokes, in print, make you want to cry. Or do you think it was unintentional?

  2. That's an interesting question - I'm guessing it was unintentional, because no one takes second place to Rohmer in seeing things in black and white. If he thought Mulroney was a lush, he'd have telegraphed what he really meant pretty clearly.

I wonder what he makes of Harper? I'm guessing he's like those Reagan Republicans who can't stand people like John Boehner - still votes for the party, but hates the people currently running it.

    1. On the other hand, Harper sure likes pipelines. Even more than President Blank.

  3. How local is this show? It's like a Bob and Ray on night when they just don't have it, and each one expects the other one to start being funny.

Rohmer's interesting about leaders. Unless they're communists, he likes anyone -- or at least has a soft spot for them -- if he gets the impression that they're getting their way. Even Rommel and Trudeau.

    1. You get the impression that Rohmer thinks Trudeau wasn't a bad sort, just a little misguided. Rommel? Fine military man. Didn't smoke, you know. Shame he was on the other side. Oh, wouldn't it have been great if we could've teamed up to fight the commies.
