Yep, the only thing missing in The Green North is a reason to do it at all. I wonder if Rohmer knew it, too.
If only The Green North were a novel. It could begin with a race war in Detroit and a column of refugees gunned down on the Ambassador Bridge. Segue to an aerial scouting trip in a fat-tired Otter, a conference with captains of industry, sex with an Inuit, an Air Force One fact-finding trip to a planned community in Siberia ("Vodka? Good thing he'd planned ahead..."), a feasibility study, and finally a proposal on the Prime Minister's desk. Or maybe a prime time television address.
"My fellow Canadians, I have come to a decision on this plan. And my answer... is..."
"... tankers."
"… in the sky."
